New Nexus 7 Tablet Launches Early at Best Buy, Amazon, More

The next-gen slate will be available at Best Buy, Amazon, GameStop, and Walmart today, several days before its official launch in the Google Play store.

A quick visit to the Amazon.com Nexus 7 product page shows that the device is in stock, available for $229 (16GB), and ready for two-day Amazon Prime shipping.

Best Buy, meanwhile, confirmed in an email to PCMag that the tablet is on sale now at BestBuy.com and in all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores, in the 16GB and 32GB ($269.99) versions.

GameStop brick-and-mortar and virtual stores will also have the Nexus 7 in stock, starting 1 p.m. Eastern today. For a limited time, GameStop customers can also trade in items — games, consoles, accessories, smartphones, Android tablets — to earn an additional 30 percent of in-store credit for use toward a new Nexus 7

Meanwhile, The Verge confirmed that Walmart also has an early stock of Nexus 7 devices as some locations, though further details have not been revealed. Walmart did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment.

Google unveiled its next-generation tablet on Wednesday, promising a Google Play store debut on July 30 for the 16GB and 32GB Wi-Fi models. A $349 4G LTE version will launch “in the coming weeks,” and will be unlocked, meaning it can tap into 4G service from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon.

The new Nexus 7 has the same 7-inch screen as its predecessor, but gets a display boost up to 1,920-by-1,200, while the pixels per inch also jump from 216 to 323 — the highest resolution for a 7-inch tablet and the highest PPI for any tablet on the market, Google said.

Running a 1.4-GHz, quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the device ships with latest Android version, 4.3 Jelly Bean. Nexus 7 also comes with 2GB of memory, dual-band Wi-Fi, support for Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, wireless charging, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing cam and 5-megapixel rear camera, as well as dual stereo speakers and virtual surround sound tech.
